2020 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO Towing Capacity Tested

The 2020 Toyota Tundra truly embodies the old saying, “Work hard, play hard.” To prove it, we drove it over 4,000 miles, from Dallas to Northern Montana, pulling a 33 foot travel trailer.

And it didn’t disappoint!

In fact, I can assure you, the 2020 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO is a BEAST!

Our trailer, fully loaded, comes in close to 7,200 pounds. Powered for 2020 exclusively by the 5.7L i-FORCE V8 engine that offers up to 9,800 pounds of towing capacity, a multi-state family road trip while pulling a travel trailer proved to be a cinch.

This coming from a gal that rarely puts a lot of emphasis on engine size. Driving through the mountains of Wyoming and Montana, I could have easily forgotten the trailer I was towing.

The engine may have let us know it was working on its way up the mountain, but it never faltered in making the haul.

An easy downshift slowed us down without putting strain on the Tundra’s brakes, made it even easier with the integrated trailer brake controller.

Additionally, the trailer-sway control offered plenty of assistance through the windy plains of Kansas. Keeping her steady against the crosswinds was no joke!

Finally, the integrated backup camera made hitching up the trailer a cinch. It was clear, offered guides, and saved our marriage as many times as we had to do it!

I easily became a master at towing using the fully-equipped Tundra TRD PRO!

But, I was still just as impressed from the passenger side of the truck.

The heated seats became my favorite feature as we began to make our way further north into colder temperatures.

The girls, after thousands of miles on the road, appreciated the leg room found in the back seat.

Not to mention, we were all grateful for the comfortable seats, especially the front power-adjustable seats with lumbar control. Our old backs needed the support on the long ride.

Cruise control and 5 cup holders were perhaps two of the biggest winners for the family road trip portion though. Both are essential when driving for long hours.

Another essential? Music! The 8“ touch-screen AM/FM/HD Radio, with USB media port and charge ports, was the most used feature by everyone.

Also quite helpful and necessary when navigating thousands of miles of unknown roads.

As you can imagine after several miles on the road, we passed the aux cord around to hear hundreds of different songs along the way.

Never a quiet moment with two teenagers and tween in the backseat!

  • Apple CarPlay®

  • Air conditioning with dust and pollen air filter (we drove through several areas with wildfires burning nearby)
  • 4.2-inch TFT Multi-Information Display
  • Power vertical sliding rear window
