Ant-Man set visit with Judy Greer

Judy Greer Warmed Us with Laughter on Set of Ant-Man

Disney disclosure

Judy Greer sat down to talk to us on the set of Ant-Man last November and apologized. She was sorry for the crazy cold weather that happened to come in the few days we were in town; and admitted she had nothing to do with it. Not to mention, it was making her “eat like a pig” so she was not very happy with any of it.

Yep. This pretty much set the tone for our time with Judy Greer, who plays Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) ex-wife, Maggie, in Ant-Man. It was bitter cold during our set visit and Judy was sure to acknowledge it from our heated tent in the backyard. In fact, she kept the conversation light and fun, often making us laugh through her answers and quirky facial expressions. She was pretty amazing to sit and have a private chat with… even in the cold.

Judy told us that her audition was pretty “old-fashioned.” She simply auditioned and found out she got the part within 24 hours (rare for movie auditions… especially one of this scale).  I guess they knew right away she was perfect for the part! For Judy, she had been working so much that it was actually her first audition in quite some time. You better believe she was feeling pretty good about herself after that call. I mean, I would too!

Ms. Greer wanted this part after learning Peyton Reed was directing. Well, him + Paul Rudd was a pretty good selling point. Not to mention, she believes that “it’s the comedy that’s gonna keep us interested in them.” According to Judy, some superhero movies lack a “genius sense of comedy” but not Ant-Man. After all, when we watch them over and over again with our kids (as they tend to want to do), we need the comedy. She knew Paul would make the movie funny. I totally agree.

As I mentioned, Judy kept the conversation fun. When we asked her if she was familiar with Ant-Man or even liked comic books, she gave us a pretty straight-forward “sure” face and said, “I think comic books are great.” We laughed and told her to be honest. So, she was:

I love the idea of them. I’m not a big comic book person. My agent, as a start gift, bought me a giant, really beautiful, hard cover coffee table book about Marvel comic book heroes. He was like ‘brush up.’ So, yeah, it’s not my genre of choice. I’m a Rom-Com girl. But, I think that this one’s gonna be good. And I think superhero movies are great because they do teach a really good lesson to all of us.”

Really though, she describes her character as being “non-stunty” so she simply plays another version of herself. She wanted Maggie to be a strong person who, in her own way, has a positive influence on her ex-husband. She figured that would be more layered and interesting. Therefore, that’s what she did for this role.

Overall, Judy said working on the cast was easy because of how “nice and cool” everyone was. Even when she was tired after flying in to work a 15 hour day, she would remind herself that Paul had been there every day, all week, for several weeks. He was still fresh and funny, making jokes, and being nice to everyone. So she knew she could push through too and had a great time doing so!
