Scarlett Johansson Feels Empowered as Black Widow
According to Scarlett Johansson, Marvel listens to its fan base. So, when we asked her when there would be a “Black Widow” movie out, she said, “if you request it, they will come.” Therefore, make some noise for Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Marvel, and particularly Kevin Feige, understand that the fans are who “drive the train.” After all, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier we see more of Natasha and learn bits of pieces of her background. Johansson describes her as “black and white with a grey moral code.” Natasha not only has her feminine wiles, but she is also very intelligent and uses her wits to get things done. She has the ability to get things done but remains a playful character.
In fact, as the movie plays on, we see a different side of Natasha. A romantic side. Damaged from her past, she uses what she has from life experiences to drive her everyday emotions. She realizes that people can be taken from her or used against her, so she doesn’t try to get too close. But, as a human, Natasha’s heart years for love and, even though afraid, she finds herself yearning for it.
Even though her personal side comes out, the Black Widow is still in full force. As one of the oldest female superheroes, Natasha has a vast library of source material for Scarlett Johansson to pull from. Plus, the Black Widow has had several incarnations and many different people have their hand in her stories. Therefore, there is plenty of background information to pull from as her story plays out. After all, her many connections plus both love interests and failures, have shaped and molded her into her character: Black Widow.
Scarlett also shared the screen with her stunt double, Heidi Moneymaker (yes… her real name, gotta love it). Scarlett and Heidi have worked together from the very beginning on developing Black Widow’s fighting style. They work in tandem to create a consistent, playful kind of style that is ultimately seen in the film. I love the fact that Ms. Johansson is not afraid to talk about how her body simply cannot contort to do the things the Black Widow’s role calls for… and she is happy to share that part with Heidi.
