Disclosure: We are thrilled to work with The Patchery as an ambassador to share these fabulous design-your-own kids’ fashion designs. All experiences and thoughts are my own.

We encourage our children to be what they want to be. We try not to guide them into what we want for their lives. They are given the freedom to direct their own paths. Even if it’s something that I may not completely understand — such as fashion design. Not that I think it’s a crazy dream, but because I know nothing about fashion. Therefore, I sat down with our 10 year old, Jaci, and asked her a few questions to better understand her dreams.

Tween Fashion Designer

Working with The Patchery has given us a great segue into opening the conversation with her. Each month as we sit in front of the computer and begin designing a new article of clothing, I can see the sparkle in her eyes. She gets so excited and carefully sifts through each design as well as every fabric. Being able to craft an article of clothing all by herself, to suit her tastes, is exhilarating. It gives her a sense of accomplishment and further fuels her aspirations of becoming a fashion designer.

Why do you want to be a fashion designer?

I have always wanted to be a fashion designer because I feel like I can make them for people in need. I can give them to people who don’t have clothes. It’s why I want to travel. I want to go to Paris. I want to take my designs to people around the world that need them and watch their faces when I give them my designs!

What inspires your designs?

The whole world inspires my designs. It depends. Sometimes I just look at a piece of clothing and think about how it will look better with a splash of this fabric or a bit of that one. I can look at something and imagine ways I can make it look better; more bold maybe.

What does fashion mean to you?

The world! The future! Fashion allows me to express MY style and who I am. My personality can shine through my clothes. It expresses my identity as well as my feelings. Think about it, you can often tell how someone feels just by looking at the way they decided to dress for the day. I want to design clothes that inspire people to feel happy the moment they put them on!
