SeaWorld AdventureCon

I tell you: one must have chaos within oneself, to give birth to a dancing star.
~Friedrich Nietzsche

This past weekend I was invited to attend AdventureCon as part of the SeaWorld Wildside  Blogger Ambassadors. I cannot tell you how excited I was to get to go! Plus, I was able to bring my family along for some fun. Before we were able to fully explore both SeaWorld and Aquatica, we enjoyed learning about our writing with Jeff  Herrington. There were several great tips he passed on to us that I thought I could share.

Tips to Make Your Blog More Effective

  • Explore different tv shows, radio stations, books, and blogs than you would typically choose for sources of inspiration
  • Be specific with the facts you convey {time, location, amounts, colors, conditions, etc}
  • Be specific with reactions {How did it affect your senses? Emotions? etc}
  • Be authentic to yourself and attract others like you
  • Have a point and convey it early on
  • Make sure your writing is web-friendly

Did you know that you blink half as much when you are staring at a computer screen, and, therefore, your eyes tire quicker? This means that writing for the web shold be different than writing for print. Here are some tips to follow #6 above.

Make Sure Your Writing is Web-Friendly

  • Keep sentences simple {20 words or less}
  • Sentence fragments okay
  • Use of ellipses {…} are okay
  • Starting a sentence with “and” or “but” is okay
  • Paragraphs should have no more than 3-4 sentences
  • Keep keywords in headlines and sentences to the left of your screen {eyes tend to stay that direction and bots pick up those words better}

Finally, people generally only scroll about a screen and a half down on their computer. Therefore, in order to keep them reading, try these ideas.

Keep Them Reading

  • Use teaser excerpts on homepage
  • Present information in a list format
  • Use images to guide the eyes downward
  • Use subheads to break up the text
  • Keep hyperlinks short and precise, as well as effectively used

Whew! We had a busy morning but it was full of great information! I am excited about putting it all into action and continuing to better my blog as I go. How about you? Were you able to learn something from the lists above? Have something else to share? I am always ready to learn!
