When was the last time you were inspired to action by a movie? There are sometimes scenes that you cannot move beyond without reacting. In Thao’s Library, you find how one woman’s quest for more leads to her to a friendship that will forever change her world.
Thao’s Library won at last year’s Bentonville Film Festival and is now available at your local Walmart. The film explores the complex relationship between two women from opposite sides of the planet. One Vietnamese, and ravaged by Agent Orange exposure; the other American, and drowning in depression after her sister’s unexpected death. United by a photo and a simple request, they forge an unlikely sisterhood, transcending language and culture.
“If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?” Thao replied, “Three hundred dollars, so I could buy more books.”
Thao’s Library is an extraordinarily beautiful movie that touches on both courage and healing. As you are pulled into the emotions and feel the pain of both Thao and Elizabeth, you cannot help but be moved and inspired to do more. To take action and want to help fulfill Thao’s one request to fill her library.
After watching the movie (which is available at Walmart), we were motivated to do our part in some small way. Upon researching local hospitals, children’s centers, preschools and more, we actually found an online company that seemed perfect. Through strategic partnerships with over 80 literacy programs, Better World Books can impact children all over the world. Based on their “power to the people” and “love your mother” sustainability standards, we felt we could make the biggest impact by sending them books.
The girls and I found an assortment of books at Walmart and then delivered them to a local drop box for the organization. The kids loved knowing they could make a difference in a child’s life across the world by simply sharing their love for books.
Bentonville Film Festival (BFF)
The Bentonville Film Festival was co-founded by Academy Award Winner® Geena Davis (Founder and Chair, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media) and entrepreneur Trevor Drinkwater (CEO, ARC Entertainment) in 2015.
