Having a sensitivity to fragrances means there are a lot of shampoos, soaps, detergents, deodorants and more that I can not use. Not to mention, just walking by someone “drenched” in cologne or perfume can close my throat within seconds. Rubbing up next to fabric smothered in a certain fabric softener smell can cause me to break out in hives. Perhaps God was protecting me early on by my choice to be a tomboy and never wear make-up. I honestly just found out about the allergy to fragrances about 2 years ago at a MOPS meeting simply by chance. It literally changed my life!

I am now more aware of the fragrances in our home and we use fragrance-free products when we can. We also noticed when Monkey was very young {after Pepper held her just after putting on perfume and she broke out in hives} that she, too, is allergic to fragrances. Thus, in order to keep both of from breaking out in huge, red, itchy whelps, watery eyes and tight feeling throats, we do our best to avoid any unnecessary scents. Pepper knows better than to spray on perfume and try to come near us. In fact, Jake has an obsession with colognes but keeps them in his room downstairs and  sprays them down there well before we come in contact with him. SuperDad has even had to stick to “old faithfuls” when it comes to cologne so that I can just be near him without breaking out in a rash.

Benadryl and Singulair are a constant in our medicine cabinet. And, until recently, I had actually found a shampoo at the Dollar Tree that was fragrance free and cleaned my hair. Unfortunately, they soon stopped carrying the product and I was again on the hunt. Showering is my biggest issue when it comes to the itching. As the soaps or shampoos run down my entire body I begin to turn red and itch… and itch! Oh, it’s awful! One night after I got out of the shower I showed SuperDad the whelps on my legs from itching. The next day he went on a search for something that would help.

Johnson's Natural Baby Shampoo

His solution?  JOHNSON’S® NATURAL® Baby Shampoo. Now, I was not totally against using a baby shampoo, but this particular one doesn’t have the best of smells really. And, yes, I realize the “smell” is what I am allergic to… but sometimes I miss the fruity fragrances my hair used to carry. Although, being able to get through a shower without wanting to rip my skin off is probably worth the less flattering fragrance I believe! 🙂

JOHNSON’s® NATURAL® Baby Shampoo allows me the freedom to get clean without the scratching and rash afterwards. Plus, since Monkey’s skin carries the same sensitivities we can share and she does not have to experience the awful effects either. Not to mention, being a baby product with mainly natural ingredients, it leaves my skin feeling sultry soft and moist. It’s amazing and my newest life changer.

Do you have fragrance allergies or no someone who does? What brands do they use? I am always looking for new products to try not only with shampoos, but with soaps, detergents, deodorants and more. I just want to be able to not itch! It gets rather annoying and, although I am learning to deal with it, I would like to educate Monkey early so that she knows better how to manage it throughout her own life.
