As parents, we should always set examples for our children through our daily choices. When our children see us choosing to live a healthy lifestyle, they are more likely to follow suit. Recently Colby and I decided to step up in taking care of our own health… and have enjoyed having the kids along beside us. Exercise and taking the properly recommended vitamins for everyone in our family has been instrumental in our success thus far.

Staying healthy does not have to be boring. It may not make the kids happy right now, but I am sure they will appreciate it in the long run. For example, for the month of February we cut out all sodas. The kids were not too excited about the decision but went with it. And guess what? They survived!

We have also added daily multivitamins to everyone’s daily routine. Walgreens makes it easy (and affordable) to find the best vitamins for everyone in our family. At home, we are working to make a similar commitment to our kids. By providing them with the food, multivitamins, and other essentials they need, we are hoping to establish a routine in their lives that will carry over. After all, it is one simple vitamin all wrapped up in one. The addition of it to their every day schedule will take less than a minute but could mean a lifetime of difference.

Part of improving our own health also means being more proactive in being physically fit. We have begun exercising at least once a day with a 30 minute core routine and then adding in other activities. In fact, we have discovered that when we make exercise a fun family matter, everyone gets excited to join in. Here are just a few of the ways we have found to incorporate a physical activity into our daily routine with the kids:

  1. Put on your favorite music and dance away
  2. Play a video game that involves active movements
  3. Do a neighborhood scavenger hunt on an evening walk
  4. Add pep to the household chores with music and games
  5. Create your own family fitness videos
  6. Play Duck, Duck, Goose or similar age-appropriate games that keep you moving
  7. Use pedometers for a little friendly family competition and reward weekly winners
