In addition to Halloween, did you know that October is also National Orthodontic Health Month? A month into my daughter’s treatment plan with Invisalign Teen, I can tell you that we are learning just how important your Orthodontic Health is. And, with the onslaught of candy coming later this month, it’s important for us all to remember to take care of our teeth.
National Orthodontic Health Month
With Invisalign aligners, patients have a much easier time enjoying their favorite foods, drinks… and, yes, even candy. They can pull the aligners out to enjoy the treat and then put them back after brushing their teeth.
Honestly though, there are basic tips that can help us all maintain good dental health and still enjoy the candy this Halloween:
- Avoid Sticky Situations — Sticky, chewy candies cling to your teeth. Plus, that sugary stickiness stays on your teeth much longer and can cause cavities.
- Drink Water — After eating a piece or two of candy, be sure to drink plenty of water to help prevent tooth decay.
- No Grazing — Eat the desired pieces of candy in one setting rather than over a long time period. The longer the sugars stay on teeth, the greater chance of decay.
- Brush Up — This is the perfect time brush up on proper dental and orthodontic health practices. Plus, a new toothbrush can also encourage brushing.
Additionally, October is a great month to get an Orthodontic evaluation. Orthodontics cover much more than straight teeth. Orthodontists help detect problems with the growth and development of teeth and jaws. It’s just as important to keep track of your Orthodontic Health as it is to get regular check-ups with your general practice dentist.
