From the time a baby is born, they learn by mimicking things around them. For example, we spend countless hours repeating the word “momma” to our baby trying to get them to say our name. “Momma. Momma.” Again and again we say it until the day our baby finally says, “Momma.”
Safe Sun Behaviors
Our children learn much more from us as they grow and develop. From basic life skills to daily habits and more, they mimic what they see us do. I’ve always been a firm believer that children learn by example, so we do our best to set the right example. From tying their shoes to the importance of applying sunscreen, there is so much to instill in our kids as they grow.
For instance, this summer, I am dedicated to instilling safe sun behaviors in my children, including applying Neutrogena®. My mother is currently fighting her third round of cancer. Although she has Lymphoma, her father and two of her sisters have battled skin cancer. It has been shown that skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. We can help our children reduce the risk of melanoma by teaching them to make sunscreen application a daily habit.
How? By simply by living out what we tell them. To set the right example, I always make sure my kids see me applying sunscreen on myself first and then, have them #MimicMommy. By making it fun, such as through song, it not only encourages them to do it, but helps them remember to do so as well.
How do you teach your children to demonstrate safe sun behaviors?
Studies show that kids are more likely to adopt healthy habits, like applying sunscreen, if they see their moms applying it on themselves. We’ve teamed up with Neutrogena for their #MimicMommy MOVEment to rally moms to help change skin cancer statistics and raise the first generation of sun-safe children.
Watch our PSA that features a fun and easy way to apply sunscreen that we like to call, “Rub, Rub, Rub Your Face.” You’ll see why at the end! AD

Just as you may tell your kids to sing the ABCs while washing their hands, we made up a song to remind them to apply sunscreen. Studies show that kids are more likely to adopt healthy habits, like applying sunscreen, if they see their moms applying it on themselves. Therefore, we sing the song in a round so that, from the lyrics to the motions, they can easily mimic my movements.
How can you make a difference in protecting your children?
Start early! Like right now! Make applying sunscreen second nature as they watch you apply it daily to yourself. They can then help spread the word to their friends as they grow, and, together, we can create the first “sun-safe generation.”
Neutrogena is launching the MimicMommy MOVEment, to rally moms to help change skin cancer statistics and raise the first generation of sun-safe children. Neutrogena teamed up YouTube stars the Holderness Family to encourage all to get up and DANCE their way to sun protected skin. Check out how in the new video: The #MimicMommy Dance.
To help support this important cause, Neutrogena will donate $10K to the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation.
