How to Style a Tank Top

Tank tops may dip in and out of fashion, but at the moment they’re seeing a definite renaissance.

That being said, working out how to style these kinds of items to make them work with the rest of your outfit can be a little tricky, especially if you’re not used to styling these kinds of things.

As with anything, it can make it a lot more approachable to break things down into separate steps. From choosing a tank top to color considerations, these are a few things to keep in mind when styling a tank top this summer.

Choose your tank top

First of all, there are multiple different kinds of tank tops to choose from, depending on what you want them for.

You’ve got everything from tight tank tops that can double up as sports bras to baggier styles that are more similar to t-shirts.

No matter which style you go for, it’s important that the fit is right. Too baggy, and it may just slip off your shoulders. Too tight and you’ll likely feel constricted—try on as many options as possible until you’ve found your match.

Obviously, each of these kinds of tank tops can be styled in slightly different ways, and you’ll want to choose a look that suits your top.

Whether you start with functionality or style, it’s important that you’re relatively consistent with that look.

Keep it casual

In most cases, you’ll find that tank tops suit a more casual aesthetic . As a result, you’ll find that they work best when paired with other casual items. Think denim shorts, jeans, or other wide-legged trousers for your bottom half.

Up top, you might want to combine the tank top with something else, unless it’s a particularly hot day. You can throw a plaid shirt on top, or any other oversized shirt, to build up a bit of texture.

You can take the shirt off when it gets hot, but it’s nice to have something just in case the temperatures drop a little bit.

Color considerations

Lastly, while most people do tend to wear black or white tank tops, you don’t have to go that way. You can find all sorts of colorful and patterned options as well, especially from suppliers such as Screen Textiles

Take a look at some of the options that are available, and think about how they’ll match the rest of your outfits.

There’s nothing wrong with going for a complete wardrobe overhaul, but if you’re just trying to get one or two tank tops and you have no skirts, trousers, or shorts that will suit a bright pink or orange option, you might be better off sticking with something a little safer.

Styling your tank top just right can take some trial and error, but it’s worth it if you want to take pride in your looks.

With just a bit of trial and error, you can find some looks that suit you perfectly, getting you ready for the long, hot summer ahead.
