Even as a believer, there are questions about the afterlife. What happens when we pass away? Is heaven for real? For one 4 year old boy in Kansas, a ruptured appendix led him to encounter whom he believes was Jesus… and says that, yes, “Heaven is For Real.”
Heaven is For Real
Although I have picked up the book several times, I admit I have never read it. Therefore, I was unsure of the story beyond knowing that little Colton took a trip to heaven. I was not sure what to expect but knew there would be tears at some point. I did not know how much the movie would correlate with my own life and struggles as a mom. It put things into perspective for me as I watched the movie and confirmed my own faith in areas where I may have been lacking.
Based on the #1 New York Times best-selling book of the same name, Heaven is For Real brings to the screen the true story of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world.
Small-town pastor Todd Burpo (Greg Kinnear) is known for his sermons. Although his popularity and ministry is strong, his willingness to give in many ways plays into his financial hardships. His wife Sonja (Kelly Reilly) often reminds him of their money woes, but Todd keeps pushing through knowing they will find a way out. When their 4 year old son, Colton, becomes dangerously ill from a ruptured appendicitis, none of that matters anymore.
As Colton is close to death on the operating table, Todd finds himself angry with God. Shouting and praying at the same time. Trying to make sense of the whole situation. Meanwhile, Sonja is on the phone with church members asking for prayer. Personally, I have been right there. In both circumstances. Angry and asking God, “Why?” Calling everyone I know from the hospital in the middle of the night to pray. To ask God to let me keep the child I feared I was losing 26 weeks into my pregnancy. The fear of knowing I had already lost one and could lot bear losing another. All of this became so real as I intently watched the scenes play out in front of me. It was a reality I have faced in my own life and made the movie come alive.
Although the theme of the movie may be controversial for some, believers and non-believers alike, I believe our perception is what we make of it. Greg Kinnear gives a stellar performance as he is known to do and Connor Corum (Colton) is simply too cute to not adore. Together the two work to bring home the story and share this near-death experience.
