Conquer Your Credit To Create Life You Want

Disclosure: This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Chase and #WeAllGrow Latina Network.

Last year, Colby and I sat down and decided that we wanted to buy a home. We had been renting for years and really wanted something that we could call our own. The investment was one we wanted to make both for our family and our financial future. But, our biggest fear was making sure we had the credit to make the purchase.

Conquer Your Credit

It wasn’t that we had bad credit, it was that we didn’t really have any credit. And when you think about it, credit plays a big role in your future and has tremendous impact on your ability to achieve life’s milestones—such as buying a home. Therefore, we had to tackle this hurdle if we wanted to make our dream a reality. We discussed our credit scores with a mortgage loan officer and, together, devised a plan of action. Honestly, I would have rather jumped from a plane with a tiny parachute attached to my back than work on my credit. I was that anxious about the concept.

That’s the first step when tackling your credit: know your score and the methods it will take to manage it. Knowledge is key! There are several tools available that empower you to make savvy financial decisions and manage your credit with confidence. Don’t wait. This is the time to overcome your hesitation and conquer your credit! It doesn’t have to be intimidating and you will feel empowered as you begin the steps towards achieving optimal financial health.

Yes, it will be nerve-wracking as you begin to work to raise your credit score, but now is the time to empower yourself to be financially healthy and give yourself the freedom to feel confident about your money. In fact, when managed wisely, credit can be a tool that open doors for you. From buying a house to getting a cell phone contract, the credit information that a lender requests could mean the difference between paying huge interest fees and potentially securing the deals we want.

Colby and I worked diligently for 8 months to raise our scores over 100 points in order to not only get approved for the loan, but to secure a low interest rate. Once we used the tools and knowledge we gained throughout the experience, it was easy to manage our scores. We also discovered that having that financial knowledge was crucial for our well-being—not just today but for the long run.

I’m sure our kids will agree now that we are in the new house! AND, I still don’t think you can get me to go sky diving. So, conquering my credit score was definitely the better path to take.
