5 Germ Free Tips for Back to School

It is that time of year when the kids are gearing back up to head back to school. There are backpacks, clothes, and school supplies to be purchased. Everyone has to fall back into the school year routine and preparations have to be made. The kids are going to be entering into a new environment soon and it is also important to start preparing for germs as well. We all know that germs and bacteria are around, and, therefore, the trick is in keeping the family healthy in spite of the odds. By taking steps at home, we can bolster their immune systems and help prevent the unnecessary spread of germs.

5 Germ Free Tips for Back to School

  1. Get Plenty of Rest – This is perhaps the one area where I need the most reminding… for myself. Not only does a lack of sleep affect the body’s immune system, but it also delays physical performance, as well as influences both our memory and moods. Therefore, make sure the kids have a set nightly routine that allows between 8-12 hours a night.
  2. Stay Active – As we are able to keep the kids up and moving, their immune systems are getting stronger. The body’s natural ability to fight off any illness or infection is increased when there is a healthy heart, strong lungs, and an able body to aid the fight. By encouraging at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise a day we are developing stronger body functions and a better immune system.
  3. Eat Healthy – A healthy diet full of rich vitamins can help boost the immune system and keep them feeling energized and great. Ensure that the children are getting the proper nutrition that includes fiber, lean proteins, and fruits and vegetables. Keeping the body in mint condition on the inside is just as important that the outside.
  4. Teach Proper Hygiene – Encourage your children to wash and dry their hands after interacting at school, other people’s homes, stores and more. Plus, if your child has  a cough or cold, ask that a tissue be used when coughing or sneezing and then immediately properly disposed of. If there is no tissue available the inside of your elbow may be the best bet for covering it. Use an alcohol-based sanitizer when there are no other options.
  5. Stay Home When You’re Sick – I know that sounds like a no-brainer, but there are parents that still send their kids to school when they are sick. Your child should be fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to the classroom. Keeping the germs confined to your home rather that sending them to the school, store, church or other is a welcomed service to all of the others children and parents we well.
